UK Minister: Will consider new tactics, resources to end riots

U.K. Home Secretary Theresa May Tuesday said she will respond to police advice on new tactics or additional resources that may be needed to bring the worst outbreak of social unrest in at least a decade to an end.

Police Monday night struggled to contain a third night of rioting and rampant looting that ricocheted from one London neighborhood to another after a community protest over a police shooting here exploded into Britain’s worst outbreak of social unrest in at least a decade.

The violence spread haphazardly across London, mostly through economically challenged, mixed-race areas that have sometimes been plagued by high unemployment and tensions with police.

Speaking to the BBC, May declined to rule out a host of options, including the use of water cannon, military support for the police, or a curfew.
